Common Questions

A Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC), what Riley is, is certified by the CCPA (Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association), they have ethics and standards of practice to abide by. A therapist is not a protected title, so some may call themselves a therapist with little to no credentials. A psychologist has different credentials through the Saskatchewan College of Psychologists, and can do psychological assessments and counselling. A psychiatrist is a doctor who diagnoses and prescribes medication for mental conditions.

Fees currently range from $140 – $200, per session, depending on the nature of the appointment. Not necessarily. This depends on your insurance coverage, so check into that prior to booking.

As a Canadian Certified Counsellor, I do not provide assessment for ADHD or Learning Disabilities. I suggest you contact another professional that can provide ADHD and Learning Disability assessments such as Richie Wade-Cummings, Registered Psychologist (Provisional). Please contact him directly to learn more about the assessment process.

The initial intake session is a bit longer (65 minutes) than a typical session (50 minutes). When a session is booked for 60 minutes, this is broken down into 50 minutes of face-to-face therapeutic time, and 10 minutes of recordkeeping.

This depends on the client and what they are working on in sessions. Typically 1-2 weeks, however this will be discussed during the intake session.

This also depends on the clients, their goals and process.

Yes, kind of. Typically the more work you put in to the therapeutic process (with therapist and between sessions) the more growth and progress towards your goals you will make. The process unfolds differently for everyone. It does however require active participation.  It can be emotionally taxing – dealing with “heavy” stuff that you’ve probably never talked to anyone about before. Riley’s job is to help build safety while you process whatever may come up in sessions.

Yes, we will use a variety of tools from different evidence-based treatment modalities to help support you in reaching your goals.  Mindfulness skill is central and first used in DBT, and is now also used in methods of CBT.

Feeling anxious is a survival method, Anxiety Disorder is based on strict criteria outlined in the DSM or ICD. A Psychologist, Psychiatrist (APE), Social Worker (APE) or medical doctor can make diagnosis of an Anxiety Disorder or other mental health conditions. You do not need a diagnosis to benefit from the tools of managing anxiety in sessions, and we are happy to help with this.

Yes, medication and therapy are often more effective when working together. With consent we can consult with your doctor if needed.

No, being in therapy at Cultivate is confidential. In fact, if we see you out in public, we are ethically not allowed to acknowledge you so we do not break confidentiality. Limits to confidentiality include: risk of harm to yourself or others, abuse/neglect or legal proceedings where session notes are subpoenaed.

A support person is definitely welcome to come and be in the waiting room, to drive you to your appointment, and then we can have your appointment where confidentiality can be properly established with just us two in the session.

If you’re employed, check your extended benefits. Some employers have employee programs that work directly with your benefits and is no cost to you. Yes, these sessions are called “telehealth” and are available on the booking site.
